Urban Mission

York, Baltimore, Washington D.C., Richmond, Raleigh, Winston-Salem, and Charlotte are just a few of the urban areas that make up the landscape of the Southeastern District. 10% of the country's population resides within the geographical region of the District. The opportunity for Gospel work, especially in the urban setting is great.

The Lutheran Mission Society (LMS), Baltimore MD has been an advocate for the city. LMS continues to partner with congregations to establish compassion centers where mercy ministries define the first step of engaging neighbors with Jesus. There are currently ten Compassion Centers in Maryland and York, PA where over 500 people come daily for help with the physical necessities of life and for the nourishment of spirit that only Jesus can give. Weekly, ++++ are present for devotions and worship. LMS, in partnership with Immanuel, Baltimore MD, share a mission vicar.

Faith & Work Enterprises, Inc (Baltimore city) was the response that grew out of a very public moment when Freddie Gray died. In response to a call for prayers for the city and regular prayerwalking, relationships with members of the Sandtown community were established. From those relationships, a ministry to build “capacity for meaningful work and holistic wellbeing by engaging unemployed and underemployed men in training, practical experience, and mentorship in preparation for a lifetime of work” was born. One of the outcomes of work will be Pennsylvania Avenue Chocolates – a sweet response where we will all be able to contribute to the ongoing work of strengthening the very core of the inner city neighborhood.
