Wellness Wednesday – “Countering The Downward Spiral of Burnout”

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands. This Wellness Wednesday, we’re exploring the downward spiral of burnout and how to recognize its stages. Awareness is the first step towards prevention and recovery.

The Downward Spiral of Burnout

  1. A Need to Prove Yourself
The journey often begins with an intense need to prove yourself. You strive to demonstrate your worth, capabilities, and dedication, often setting unrealistic expectations.
  2. You Work Harder
To meet these expectations, you push yourself to work harder. Long hours, skipping breaks, and taking on more responsibilities become the norm.
  3. You Ignore Your Own Needs
Self-care takes a backseat. Sleep, nutrition, and relaxation are sacrificed in the name of productivity and achievement.
  4. Panic and Conflict, Feel Threatened
The relentless pressure leads to feelings of panic and conflict. You start to feel threatened by any sign of failure or criticism.
  5. Change of Values, Work-Only Focus
Your values begin to shift. Work becomes your sole focus, overshadowing relationships, hobbies, and personal interests.
  6. Deny Problems, Cynical, Intolerant, Blaming
As stress builds, you start to deny that there’s a problem. Cynicism and intolerance creep in, and you may find yourself blaming others for your frustrations.
  7. Social Withdrawal, Resort to Substance Abuse
To cope, you might withdraw socially. In some cases, individuals turn to substance abuse as an escape from the relentless pressure.
  8. Odd Behavior, Others Concerned
Changes in behavior become noticeable. Colleagues, friends, and family express concern as you act out of character.
  9. Depersonalization, Life Feels Mechanical
Life begins to feel mechanical. You become detached from your work, emotions, and even from yourself.
  10. Inner Emptiness
A profound sense of inner emptiness sets in. Activities that once brought joy now feel meaningless.
  11. Depression, Exhaustion
The final stages involve deep depression and exhaustion. You’re mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually spent.
  12. Collapse
Eventually, the strain becomes too much, leading to a complete collapse. This can manifest as a breakdown, severe illness, or an inability to function.

As Richard Gunderman, MD, PhD, articulates, “Burnout at its deepest level is not the result of some train wreck of examinations, long call shifts, or poor clinical evaluations. It is the sum total of hundreds and thousands of tiny betrayals of purpose, each one so minute that it hardly attracts notice.”  However, left unattended, these tiny betrayals of purpose build momentum to the point that you quickly feel like you are in a free fall.

The Upward Spiral to Battle Burnout

Understanding the downward spiral is crucial, but how do we reverse the process? Here are steps to foster an upward spiral and battle burnout:

  1. Acknowledge the Problem
Recognition is the first step. Acknowledge that burnout is affecting you and that it’s a serious issue needing attention.
  2. Seek Support
Don’t hesitate to seek support from friends, family, colleagues, or mental health professionals. Sharing your struggles can provide relief and insights.
  3. Reevaluate Your Goals
Take time to reevaluate your personal and professional goals. Ensure they are realistic and align with your core values and purpose.
  4. Prioritize Self-Care
Invest in self-care. Make time for sleep, healthy eating, exercise, and relaxation. Also, make sure you spiritually care for yourself by taking sabbath rest to connect with Jesus. These are not luxuries but necessities.
  5. Set Boundaries
Learn to set healthy boundaries at work and in your personal life. It’s okay to say no and to delegate tasks.
  6. Reconnect with Your Passions
Engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment outside of work. Reconnecting with hobbies and interests can rejuvenate your spirit.
  7. Practice Mindfulness
Incorporate mindfulness practices such as meditation on God’s Word, prayer, and deep breathing exercises into your daily routine to reduce stress and increase self-awareness.
  8. Develop Coping Strategies
Develop healthy coping strategies to manage stress, such as journaling, talking to a friend, or taking short breaks throughout the day.
  9. Create a Supportive Work Environment
Advocate for a supportive work environment where open communication, reasonable workloads, and recognition of efforts are prioritized.
  10. Regularly Reflect and Adjust
Regularly reflect on your progress and be willing to adjust your strategies as needed. Burnout prevention is an ongoing process.
