Update on Tropical Storm Debby
Tuesday, Aug 13, 2024
Last week we were sending an alert for those in the path of Tropical Storm Debby. This week we continue to send an alert note. The damage was not what was anticipated, SED pastors reported that ministries and communities were safe and we praise God for his mercy in the storm. We still wait, however, for the rivers and streams have not yet crested. We may experience heavy flooding as the waters continue to flow. Anticipated cresting is for this weekend.
We know that Lumberton experienced flooding. Lumberton is an area where SED volunteers spent many hours of serving following Hurricane Matthew. Needs of the community include tree work, tarping, and crawl space clearing.
We also prepare for the next storms to come. We have entered the hurricane season and it is forecasted to be a busy season with 17-24 named storms and 8-13 becoming hurricanes. Take time to be prepared, help your family know what to do in an emergency situation. Trim trees that could brush up against the house. Know who in your neighborhood might need additional help. Even plan for a presentation at church on how to be storm-ready. The SED Lutheran Servants for Christ team can help with these presentations.
As needs become known, please let your SED Disaster Response team know. We are ready to help where needed.

Hurricane Debby has made landfall and is making her presence known. Large amounts of rainfall is expected in the Carolina’s as she crawls her way through. The Southeastern District’s Disaster Response Team is preparing to respond. In these days before Debbie, you are encouraged to
- Secure or remove anything outside (patio furniture, potted plants, toys)
- Cut down any tree limbs hanging over your home that might cause damage
- Check or refresh your batteries, making certain that you have a flashlight or lantern (battery – of course)
- Check in on neighbors who may not be able to secure their home on their own
If help is needed after the storm, Lutheran Servants for Christ, the SED’s Disaster Response Team can assist with tree removal, tarping, debris removal, among other items. Please do not hesitate to reach out. Many have been equipped to serve in these times.
Now as we ready for the storm, we pray for all who will be impacted, that the Lord shows his mercy throughout our neighborhoods and communities.
Gracious Lord, especially in the midst of the storm we praise you because we know that you are with us. We pray for all who are in the path of Hurricane Debby and ask that you cover us with your love that protects us from all harm. Be with each one who weathers this storm. Assure them that you are there. And when the winds have passed and the rains have stopped, Dearest Lord, open our eyes and hearts to the needs of those around us. Guide us to respond and to be vessels of your hope and healing. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayers. Amen
