Body Building: Cultivating Kingdom Impact in Your Congregation

Continuing our series focusing on the SED’s new SIMPLE Congregational Well-Being Assessment, we turn our focus to Impact, the second dimension of congregational well-being. Impact reflects a congregation’s ability to integrate faith into the everyday lives of its members, inspire service to others, and share the transformative Good News of God’s love in Christ.

What is Impact?

Impact goes beyond internal church programs to ask: How is our faith community making a difference in the world in and through the ministry of our church? It examines how well members live out their faith daily and how the congregation collectively brings Christ’s love to the surrounding community. This includes:

  1. Connecting faith to all aspects of life through vocational discipleship.
  2. Inspiring love and service both within and beyond the church walls.
  3. Seeking the common good of the surrounding community.
  4. Witnessing lives transformed through ministry together.
  5. Equipping God’s people to share the Good News of Jesus.
  6. Encouraging and challenging one another in their faith walk.
  7. Prioritizing the surrounding community’s needs over self-focus or survival.
  8. Fostering a willingness to serve and volunteer.
  9. Implementing an intentional discipleship strategy.
  10. Building relationships with those they serve in the community.

The Biblical Foundation for Impact

Jesus reminds us of our mission in Matthew 5:16: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Similarly, Galatians 5:13 exhorts us to “serve one another humbly in love.” These verses emphasize that a thriving congregation doesn’t exist for itself but for the glory of God and the benefit of others.

The early Church exemplified this in Acts 2:47: “They enjoyed the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” Their faith-inspired actions built bridges with the surrounding community and multiplied the reach of the Gospel.

Assessing and Strengthening Impact

The SIMPLE assessment helps congregations evaluate how well they embody these principles. By exploring the ten components of Impact, congregations can:

  • Identify ways to connect members’ faith to daily life and vocational calls.
  • Highlight ministries and outreach efforts that foster meaningful community engagement.
  • Recognize opportunities to equip members for evangelism and discipleship.

Steps to Grow in Impact

Consider these practical steps for cultivating greater Impact:

  • Develop a vocational discipleship program to help members integrate faith with work and daily life.
  • Organize service projects that address specific community needs and build relationships with those you serve.
  • Offer outreach training and resources to help members share their faith confidently.
  • Celebrate stories of transformation and service to inspire others.
  • Partner with local organizations to seek the common good of your community.

Building Up the Body of Christ

Impact flows from a vibrant faith that naturally extends outward. As you reflect on this dimension, ask yourself: How is our congregation connecting faith with everyday life? Are we known for our love, service, and Gospel witness in the community?

The SIMPLE assessment provides a roadmap for identifying strengths and opportunities for growth in this area. By striving for greater Impact, your congregation can build up the Body of Christ, glorify God, and bring hope to your community.
